Bruce Brandes: Leadership Advice

In today’s featured segments, AHL founder & CEO Dan Nielsen discusses leadership with Bruce Brandes, CEO of Lucro. Brandes begins by describing a spectrum of leadership with the two extremes of “dictatorship” and complete “leading by group consensus.”

Brandes has identified his own leadership style to be right in the middle of that spectrum. He goes on to discuss the things he believes should be expected of a good leader:

  1. Deliver a clear message.
  2. Be receptive to feedback.
  3. Stay out of the way and give your people the opportunity to be and do what they are good at.

In the second segment, Brandes discusses the best advice he’s ever received, and how it was a little hard to hear at first. He reflects that this advice has served him well throughout his career:

“Whenever you have the impulse to blurt out a verbal barrage of facts and interrupt a customer who is talking, bite your tongue behind your lips as a reminder to be quiet and listen.”
