Be Clear on Authority, Responsibility, and Accountability

We’ve discussed the importance of communication in length on America’s Healthcare Leaders, and with each interview we gain more insight into just how important the proper execution of this is to the success of the organization. In today’s segment Mark Dixon reinforces the need for clear communication on authority, responsibility, and accountability.

Dixon comments on the benefits of using the RACI method to determine and clarify different roles to ensure every member of the team knows exactly what he or she is to do so that the team will experience success as a whole. The RACI method establishes these roles:

  • Responsible: The individual in charge for completion of doing the task.
  • Accountable: The individual in charge of holding the responsible person accountable to completing the task.
  • Consulted: The members of the team that help and assist in the completion of the task.
  • Informed: The people who are simply informed of the decisions made and the outcomes of the tasks.

In addition to establishing these rules, it is absolutely necessary to make sure the responsible party has the authority to get the task done. Once all of these roles are properly aligned, your team is better equipped to achieve greater success.
