Eric Barber on Learning and Growing as a Leader

In today’s featured segments, Eric Barber, president and CEO of Mary Lanning Healthcare, discusses his journey as a leader. He highlights both the good and bad situations and what he has learned in each of them.

In the first segment, Barber discusses the two most significant learning experiences he has had as a healthcare leader. He gives credit to a previous mentor for teaching him how to be a more effective leader. When placed at an institution where the leadership team was severely disjointed, he was able to use what he had learned to be more successful.

Dan Nielsen, CEO of America’s Healthcare Leaders, asks, “As a healthcare leader, how do you measure personal improvement and becoming more effective?”

Barber answers by discussing the importance of leadership development throughout the organization, and notes that Mary Lanning Healthcare conducts leadership development institutes on a quarterly basis. He goes on to state, “I want to be a better CEO tomorrow than I was yesterday,” and highlights the importance of leaders needing to learn and improve daily.
