Today we are honored and privileged to begin featuring segments from the America’s Healthcare Leaders exclusive interview with Joel Allison, retiring president & CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health. Joel Allison, who has been named to Modern Healthcare’s list of “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” twelve times, is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and his very successful career spans more than four decades.

Allison announced his retirement as CEO of the large not-for-profit health system in March of this year, and his official last day at the helm will be February 1, 2017. But it comes as no surprise that the energetic healthcare leader won’t be leaving the system completely—instead he will be stepping into a different role as senior advisor to the chairman of the board.

To begin the interview, AHL founder & CEO Dan Nielsen asks Allison for a brief overview of the different healthcare systems and positions he has held through the years.

Allison looks back on his career in healthcare with fondness for each of the unique positions where he has served:

“It’s my calling, and I have always felt called into the ministry of healthcare.”

What a refreshing perspective to have on your career! Allison’s outlook no doubt has brought a joy to each position that could have been easily missed otherwise. As we continue through these segments in the coming weeks, we encourage you to truly listen to and learn from the words and advice of this highly successful leader.
