Today we continue featuring segments from the America’s Healthcare Leaders exclusive interview with Joel Allison, retiring president & CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health. Today Allison discusses how to stay humble when you have made it to the top. Humility is a valuable leadership asset, and Allison has certainly led by example in this area.
In the first segment, Dan Nielsen, founder and CEO of America’s Healthcare Leaders, begins the interview by commenting on the humility he has witnessed in Allison’s character, and simply asks, “Where did you learn to be humble?” Allison responds:
“My mother. The scripture, the bible. My faith taught me a lot about humility. My mother reinforced that, and she would remind us of where we came from. She always said the scripture will tell you to walk humbly, and that pride comes before the fall. This is what kept me balanced.”
Allison goes on to describe a metaphor about a wheat field that has stuck with him through the years to remind him of humility: The wheat that bears the most grain bows the lowest to the ground.
In the second segment, Allison offers advice on how to keep your ego in check with just a bucket of water. Interested to hear the whole story? Click on the full segments above!
