Joel Allison on the Baylor Scott & White Merger and Other Impactful Decisions of His Career

Today we continue segments from the exclusive interview with Joel Allsion, retiring president and CEO of Baylor Scott and White Health. In today’s segments, Allison briefly discusses 5 of the most strategic decisions he has made throughout his extended career and elaborates on the success of the Baylor Scott & White Merger.

While much of a person’s career is made up of the daily, almost mundane, decisions, it is helpful to be able to pinpoint a few decisions that have made a truly great impact on your career. When Allison is asked about the 5 most impactful decisions he has made over the course of his career, he identifies and elaborates on the following:

  1. His choice of Hendrick Medical Center for his administrative residency, serving under Mr. Boone Powell, Jr.
  2. Attending the Advanced Management Practice Program at Harvard.
  3. The Baylor choice in 2000 to put a focus on quality and making it a priority.
  4. Starting the Health Texas Provider Network.
  5. The merger of Baylor Health Care system and Scott & White Health.

In the second segment, Allison discusses the success of the Baylor Scott & White merger, bringing up the importance of a compatible culture in situations like this. Before the merger happened, a cultural audit was performed to make sure each organization had a similar mission, vision, and values, and Allison points to that decision as a key part of the merger’s success.
