Joel Allison on His Calling and What Drives Him

Today we continue featuring segments from the America’s Healthcare Leaders exclusive interview with Joel Allison, retiring president & CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health. In the segment featured on Monday, Allison briefly touched on his calling into the ministry of healthcare. Today, he expounds on this in the two segments featured below.

In the first segment, Allison talks about a trip he took, while a senior at Baylor University, to accompany his brother-in-law as he scouted out a physician position at Uvalde Healthcare. What was intended to simply be a fun trip with his family revealed something to Allsion as they toured through the healthcare administration side of the hospital:

“It was kind of like the lights went on. I had never thought about the administrative side of healthcare as a ministry, but I felt like it was the Lord speaking to me.”

Allison goes on to discuss the different events leading up to him pursuing his calling in healthcare administration.

In the second segment, AHL founder and CEO Dan Nielsen asks Allison, “What drives you, inspires you, and gives you focus?” Allison responds:

“My faith…my family…and the people I get a chance to serve and be around every day and hear what they do and see what they do in caring for others and making a difference in peoples lives.”

Allison comments that he finds this both inspiring and energizing.
