With nearly 40 years in the industry, John Self has learned a thing or two about healthcare. In today’s featured interview segments he shares some of his perspectives and insights into healthcare leadership.
Self starts out by stating, “I think one of the real key things about healthcare is to have leaders who are authentic and to have leaders who can communicate.” He then goes on to describe two different leadership models, what he calls the “Conductor” model and the “Traveling Evangelist” model.
In the next segment Self reflects on lessons that can be learned from military leadership, noting,
“One of the great things about people coming from the military into leadership positions is that the military, if nothing else is true, has invested a boatload of money into helping those guys understand leadership. Some of the most successful placements I have ever made have been ex-military medical service corp personnel. Remarkable people, because they understand the value of people; they understand that you will not accomplish your objectives with your life and your career without the help of an engaged workforce.”
Lastly, Self offers some practical advice for leaders to gain honest input from others to help them better see themselves and make adjustments for the future.
