In today’s featured video segments we return to our interview with Mary Ellen Doyle, Corporate VP for Nursing Operations at Scripps Health. Doyle shares some of her insights and perspectives regarding leading well and appreciating the uniqueness of every individual whom you lead.
In the first video segment below, Doyle begins by stating, “I am a firm believer that as a leader the people around you watch your behavior. So consistency in behavior, non-judgmental behavior, is really important as a leader.” She then goes on to talk about the ways a leader can help develop the talent of his or her team, including:
- Giving consistent feedback
- Being non-judgmental
- Understanding individual perspectives
- Expecting performance
In the second segment featured today, Doyle addresses the topic of team member differences and how leaders should appreciate and leverage those differences. “I grew up with this notion, ‘Wouldn’t it be a boring world if we were all alike?’… in the workplace I keep that in the back of my mind.” She went on to note,
“When I think about the team I am working in now, we are all very different. Collectively, though, we are achieving great things… As leaders we need to appreciate that there will be individuals [who we] perhaps don’t understand, or that have a totally different point of view… If you let people live out their talents and where they’re good, they can produce contributions in ways that you never ever imagined, because they get to live out what they’re good at.”
