Hospital president Traci Bernard has held a lot of different leadership roles during her career, and over the years has developed some excellent insights into what separates the bad from the good from the great.
When asked what qualities and attributes are most important to being an effective leader, Bernard quickly listed several that immediately came to mind, including:
- Loyalty to your team
- Being a role model
- Compassion
- Passion and enthusiasm
She added at the end,
“You can’t build a team that is enthusiastic if you’re not enthusiastic and loyal and believe in them. And I think you have to believe in them in order for them to believe in you.”
In the other segments we’re featuring today, Bernard points out 3 negative qualities that hold leaders back from being truly successful, and also reflects on those leaders early in her career who gave her a chance to step into greater leadership roles.
“I really cherish those people who weren’t afraid to give me a chance and take a risk.”
